Course Description:
When you change your management, how do you know if you are moving in the right direction? Learning to monitor the land for the earliest signs of change enables you to quickly adapt your management. When you are adept at using Holistic Management to diagnose problems, you will uncover the causes of deviation from a management plan and find the reasons behind distortions in the functioning of the ecosystem (increased floods, droughts, outbreaks of problem plants and insects, disease, etc.). In principle, diagnosis using Holistic Management rests on knowing the effects the various tools tend to have on the four ecosystem processes.

Tangible Outcomes:

Holistic Ecological Monitoring enables you to gather relevant information to keep your management on track and to see trends in your Ecological Health Index over time.

Learning to monitor the land for the earliest signs of change enables you to quickly adapt your management to move toward your desired future resource base.

Learning Outcomes:

*Gain experience in the field observing signs of change.

*Learn how to complete Holistic Ecological Monitoring and become proficient enough to monitor your own land.

*Uncover the causes of the deviations from a plan, find the reasons behind distortions in the functioning of the ecosystem, and create strategies to get back on track.

All courses lead to accreditation with the Savory Institute. If you would like to take all of the courses to become an Accredited Professional, are part of onboarding for the Land to Market program, or just want to learn all that Holistic Management has to offer, register here

Jackie Eshelman
Savory Accredited Educator, EOV™ Hub Verifier, EOV Program Lead at UVE

I grew up exploring the outdoors rural Pennsylvania’s Amish Country and now make my home in Central Oregon. My journey in regenerative agriculture began teaching ecological monitoring, described as science and math in the field, for a local Expeditionary Learning middle school located in Bend, Oregon.

Graduating summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Science in Adventure Leadership Education from the College of Forestry at Oregon State University, I have spent most of my life working with people outdoors in nature. In 2017, I earned my Permaculture Design Certificate through OSU, and in 2019, I became an Accredited Professional Educator with the Savory Institute.

Through a lifetime of outdoor experience, I bring fresh eyes to landscapes as I lead the Ecological Outcome Verification (EOV™) program for Savory’s hub UVE serving the West Coast and Intermountain West. As an accredited EOV™ Hub Verifier, I find myself in the privileged position of traveling the western US visiting with farmers, ranchers, and land stewards of every kind, monitoring a vast range of landscapes and ecoregions.

Elaina Michael
EOV monitor, Savory Associate Educator

Born and raised in Ohio, I am a hands-on learner, passionate teacher of Holistic Management as it relates to all aspects of life, and wife of an aircraft mechanic. I reminisce on days spent herding sheep in Italy and Utah and long to someday create a ranching/farming community and lead kids (of all ages) on backpacking trips with pack-goats!

When not walking the land with agricultural producers and conducting Ecological Outcome Verification, I enjoy freelance grant-writing for nonprofit farms, schools developing farm-to-school programs, and others through my business Refontê Ventures. As a business
owner and Savory Accredited Professional with a Bachelors in Animal Science and a Masters in Ruminant Nutrition from Cal Poly - San Luis Obispo, I am using my knowledge, skills, and passions to guide people in returning to the land and accelerating the regeneration
of this planet that we call home.
